INFORMATION
“Mix affection, hugs and plenty of heart
Add a dollop of fun to give it a good start
Top with exactly the right amount of art
And enjoy it all together with friends!”
Art Kindergarten Konsti is a private kindergarten based in Kerava. Konsti was established in 1995 by the Kerava Art Kindergarten Association, which was formed by the Kerava School of Dance, Kerava School of Music and Kerava School of Art to provide individually-based high-quality early childhood education as well as a varied programme of daycare activities and experiences. At Konsti, children are encouraged to explore and experiment with different arts when they are at their liveliest. We support children in their overall growth and development through experiential learning by integrating music, visual arts, dance and exercise into the child’s everyday life and play.
Konsti is located in Kerava in the district of Kilta, close to Killan koulu primary school and the Kaleva Sports Park. Konsti’s surroundings provide excellent opportunities for outdoor activities and exercise. There is a lovely green park right next door, and Konsti's own courtyard has a little forest, where the children can explore nature and let their imaginations fly through play. The kindergarten is open from 6:30 am to 5.00 pm (you can find the daily programme here).
Konsti’s facilities are perfectly suited for small group activities and free play as well as exploring, making and experiencing art. Taidetalo – Art House – is a separate studio where children are inspired to dive into the fascinating world of fine arts and become familiar with various materials and equipment. Konsti went through an expansion in February 2010, thanks to which over 100 children from under 3s to preschoolers have plenty of room to play and make art at Konsti.
Konsti's own kitchen prepares delicious meals every day for both the children and staff. A few times a week, the aroma of freshly baked goods wafts from the kitchen to the group rooms and the children have fun trying to guess which food word will be in today’s word rhythm. If you have any special dietary requests or restrictions, please talk to your group’s educators or tell the kitchen staff directly.
Minna is Konsti's own kindergarten special education teacher (varhaiskasvatuksen erityisopettaja, VEO). She visits all of the groups regularly, gets to know the children and supports the group educators in their work.
If you have any questions about the growth and development of your child, you can always ask Minna. You can reach her via email at veo@taidepaivakotikonsti.fi or find her from the Kujeet group.

Mission
Konsti provides a happy atmosphere where each child’s individuality is supported and encouraged. A respectful approach combined with a stimulating environment creates a safe place for the child to grow and develop.
Konsti supports children in their overall growth by integrating music, visual arts, dance and exercise into the child’s everyday life and play. Konsti’s educators develop and implement art education in co-operation with educators from the different art institutions in Kerava.
Activities are based on different educational themes, which are inspired by the children’s experience and imagination. Planning takes into account the child’s developmental level and individual preferences and respects the child’s natural media for self-expression. Children are taught from an early age to accept, understand and value diversity and guided towards tolerance. Enriching and diversifying creative expression gives the child a good foundation for growing into an active citizen who is comfortable with expressing their opinions.
Values
The uniqueness of childhood
Respecting and encouraging the intrinsic creativity of the child is at the core of all our activities. The child's individual way of perceiving and structuring the surrounding world is appreciated. All children are treated authentically and equitably as we build trusting relationships through safe and affectionate interactions.
Creativity in play
Konsti recognises and appreciates the importance of play. After all, art and play go hand in hand. At Konsti, play is a creative blend of different artistic disciplines spiced with the child’s own unlimited imagination. Children are encouraged to indulge in play, to learn and to experience new things by themselves and together with others.
Community
Konsti is a close community of children, parents and staff. We engage parents in varied and meaningful ways. Fostering healthy and warm relationships between all parties has a significant impact on children's wellbeing. At Konsti, co-operation with parents is an important guiding value.
ART EDUCATION
“Art is having to focus on what you’re painting and so on.
And if you want to draw, you have to let your friends work in peace.”
Verna, 6.
ART EDUCATION AT KONSTI
Art education is a common theme running through all daily activities at Konsti. We support children in their overall growth and development through experiential learning by integrating music, visual arts, dance and exercise into the child’s everyday life and play.
Art education is guided by the child's intrinsic need to study, observe, learn and experience the world around them. We appreciate the importance of art in supporting children's growth and development. Early childhood education stimulates and engages the child to enjoy art and culture and may awaken a lifelong interest in the arts.
Art education is based on the national core curriculum for basic education in the arts. In addition to daily art education, the children take lessons from educators from the Kerava School of Dance, Kerava School of Music and Kerava School of Art.
“Art is kind of an artist’s job. And then you usually get to decide yourself or think about what it might be.”
Ella, 6.
Visual arts
At Konsti, every child is an artist. We believe that it is important to consider the child’s personal observations and experiences in the artistic process. At Konsti, we value spontaneous expression in all aspects of everyday life.
Konsti’s art education programme is enhanced by lessons given by educators from the Kerava School of Art. This instruction takes place in small groups at Konsti’s own art studio over an eight-week period (four weeks for the under-3s). Group educators will also take part in these classes in order to observe the children and document the process. Topics covered include colours, sizes and shapes, visual literacy, light and shadow and space.
Dance and physical education
Dance and exercise are an integral part of everyday routines, activities and playtime at Konsti. Every year, we build a core programme for dance and physical education encompassing basic exercise, musical exercise, improvisation and dance. The programme is based around a different theme each year.
The goal of Konsti’s dance classes and physical education is to encourage the child to find their own creative forms of exercise. Children explore the elements of dance at their own level with focus on imagination and play. At Konsti, dance and exercise are considered an adventure where all activities are inclusive and done on the children’s terms.
Dance is a part of everyday life from an early age, and every child in Konsti will take part in dance classes taught by a dance teacher from the Kerava School of Dance. Dance classes are divided into instruction periods, and their content is designed by the dance instructor in co-operation with Konsti’s educators based on a different theme every year. Group educators will also take part in these classes in order to observe the children and document the process. The length of the instruction period is four weeks for the under-3s and eight weeks for the older children.
We make use of the sports facilities in the surrounding area, such as Killan koulu primary school’s gymnasium, the dance studio on Seunalantie and the nearby ice rink when possible. A sure sign of the coming summer is the preschoolers’ swim class, which is a part of Konsti's physical education programme and takes place at the local pool (as soon as the renovations are finished). In addition to scheduled programmes there are plenty of daily activities that encourage movement and exercise.
“Dance is kind of frolicking where you go round and round, hand in hand.”
Otto, 6.
“A note is something you can play. If you forget what song you’re singing,
you can look at the notes.”
Maj, 5.
Music
Konsti's music education plan is goal-oriented and interactive. Children explore the elements of rhythm, voice, listening, movement, speech and improvisation. The philosophy behind music education at Konsti is the idea of experience through experiment. Our goal is to awaken the child's natural interest in music through play while supporting creativity and creative thinking and promoting a feeling of community.
In addition to learning musical skills, music education supports the child's overall growth and learning and strengthens the development of personality, self-esteem and self-image. At the same time, our aim is to strengthen the child’s personal relationship with music and spark an interest in music as a hobby.
At Konsti, music education is a natural part of everyday play and activities. Preschoolers and five-year-olds (year before preschool) take an instrument class once a week led by an instructor from the Kerava Music School. The smaller children have music classes in groups with their own educators.
“My music is soft. The car song goes toot toot.”

For children
You can apply for a place in Konsti year-round, even before your baby is born. Applications are processed on a first come first served basis, and we will get in touch with you when a suitable place is about to open. We start offering places for the new school year (starting in the autumn) in the previous spring. If you require a place in the middle of the year, please inquire directly with the director.
If you are still considering your daycare options, we are happy to show you around Konsti and tell you about our programme.
You can print out an application form here.
How to apply for a preschool education place
Parents of children starting preschool in the autumn will receive a letter from the city of Kerava containing instructions for applying for a preschool place through the Hakuhelmi portal. Konsti’s preschool places have all been filled for the 2019-2020 school year, but you can always inquire about cancellations. If your child requires daycare services before/after preschool, apply for daycare using the application form above. If your child already has a daycare place in Konsti and is starting preschool, you don’t have to fill out a new daycare application.
The director and members of staff are happy to provide more information about applying to Konsti.
For students
Konsti is a very popular work placement organisation among students in the social field. Because we want to provide our students with the best possible conditions for practical training and learning on the job, we have only a limited number of internships available every year.
It’s a good idea to get in touch well in advance if you’re interested in doing your work placement with us. At Konsti, every day is an adventure! Our community is a perfect match for students who are lively, active and eager to learn.
Come work with us!
Konsti has a high employee retention rate. However, open applications are accepted year-round and we advertise openings for substitute positions on the TE Services website from time to time. If you would like to join our cheerful team, please send an open application addressed to the director via email to marja.suomela@taidepaivakotikonsti.fi. We appreciate applications that are personal and stand out from the crowd!
In order to ensure everyone’s enjoyment and well-being, Art Kindergarten Konsti is a smoke-free and scent-free environment.
ORFF SCHULWERK
The Orff Approach at Art Kindergarten Konsti
Art education at Konsti is based on the Orff Approach. The Orff Approach is an interactive pedagogical model for education based on learning through experimentation and experiencing. While the approach is interdisciplinary, the method is rooted in music education. Through active participation, children explore the elements of rhythm, voice, movement, rhythmic and melodic instruments, improvisation, listening and art-based play. At the core of the process are the concepts of exploration, experience and co-operation. Each child is encouraged to contribute according to his or her ability and perspective. The aim is to awaken and support the child's personal interest in various forms of self-expression – such as music, dance and art – through participation in group activities.
The Orff Approach is based on:
experimentation
the joy of making music
encouraging singing and playing instruments
combining music and movement
listening with all one's senses
working together
Konsti has three qualified Orff instructors, and four other staff members are currently studying in the Orff educational training programme based in Finland. Konsti has a wide range of Orff instruments and other rhythmic instruments available for the children. The kindergarten also works together with JaSeSoi, the official Orff Association of Finland.
Composer and educator Soili Perkiö, Finland’s leading figure in children's music education, is Konsti’s patron. Our kindergarten is also twinned with Jittamett Kindergarten based in Bangkok, Thailand. Jittamett Kindergarten is known worldwide as a pioneer of the Orff Approach in early childhood education.
The International Orff-Schulwerk Forum invited Konsti to the international network of Orff schools (ASI, Associated Schools and Institutes) in the summer of 2016.
KONSTI PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Konsti parents’ association
Konsti has an active parents’ association, which organises fun activities and events that are open to all Konsti families. When your child goes to Konsti, you automatically become a member of the parents’ association. Membership is free and non-binding. The association organises various group activities, such as volunteering for events around the annual Christmas Street in Kerava. All events are voluntary, which means that you can participate just as much or as little as you wish.
The Konsti spirit stays with you! After their Konsti journey is over, preschoolers’ families automatically become Pro Konsti members, which means that for a few years you will receive notifications about current events via email.
If you have any questions or comments about the Konsti parents’ association, you can contact chairperson Taru Sihvonen (Metkut) via email at taru.sihvonen@gmail.com.
The Konsti parents’ association has prepared a comprehensive information package for parents. You can download the document here (in Finnish).

LINKS, HINTS & TIPS
Konsti’s early childhood education plan 2018 and its content areas are based on the National Core Curriculum for Early Childhood Education and Care and the National Core Curriculum for Pre-primary Education as well as the city of Kerava early childhood education and preschool curricula.
Konsti's early childhood education plan emphasises art education as a means to support learning and growth.
If you ask the children, every day is delicious at Konsti!
Yummy meals from breakfast to lunch and snacks are prepared on-site.
Our menu is based on the current meal plan of Kerava's daycare centres, although Friday in Konsti is traditionally a soup day. From time to time, our cooks may make some changes to the menu based on availability. The menu is pinned on the notice board in the entrance hall.
Kindergarten meals have an important educational role. The main nutritional and educational purpose of these meals is to promote and support the health and well-being of the child. The objective of the structured meal plan is to provide nutritional support in combination with family meals in order to promote growth and development and to guide the children towards a balanced and varied diet. Healthy habits regarding diet, sleep and exercise adopted as a child have a long-term effect on subsequent adult health behaviour and the prevention of many diseases in later life.
The educational goal is to foster good eating habits and good manners for life. The nutritional goal is to provide the child with adequate and balanced meals and snacks each day.
